In the world of those seeking for surgical weight-loss procedures, lap band surgery (also known by its registered trademark LAP-BAND®) is a medical boon. Lap band surgery is a kind of weight-loss surgery that modifies the anatomy of your stomach in such a way that your food intake gets reduced. You will get a fairly good idea of lap band surgery in this article.

What is a lap band?

The procedure of lap band surgery involves the use of a gastric band in the stomach. A ‘lap-band’ is an FDA approved brand name for the band. It is an adjustable belt made of silicone that is surgically implanted around the top of your stomach. It can be adjusted and made tighter or looser according to one’s requirements. The lap band is connected to a port which can inflate the device to accelerate the weight loss. The passage to your stomach becomes smaller and you will eat lesser than usual because of the feeling of fullness experienced.

How does the surgery work?

During the lap band surgery, the surgeon will make a few incisions on your upper abdomen. After this, with the help of a laparoscope the surgeon will visualize the interiors of your abdomen and place the lap band around the top of your stomach. The lap band is secured in place with stitches. On the upper abdomen, the access port is secured underneath your skin. When saline is injected into the port it fills up the lap band and makes the passage to your stomach smaller. This restricts your food intake and you will gradually find yourself losing weight. If you are not getting sufficient nutrition and your food intake needs to be increased then your doctor can remove fluid from the lap band.

Are you eligible for lap band surgery?

The requirements of a candidate for lap band surgery have been specified by the National Institute of Health. If your body mass index (BMI) is more than 40 or more than 35 with associated medical conditions such as asthma, chronic cough, hypertension or diabetes, then you can go in for lap band surgery. If you are more than 100 pounds overweight then you should opt for lap band surgery. You must also be between the age group of 18 and 55.

Once the surgery is completed you can return to your normal life within a week or so. You should always follow instructions given by your doctor and follow specific exercise and nutrition routine. It is also of extreme importance that you consult with a reputed bariatric surgeon and get the procedure done at a specialized clinic.
